Welcome to Gundam Plus II, the successor to the original Gundam Plus site.

HGUC 1/144 Rick Dias

Review by Nimrod

Let me give a bit of a background into my mindset and thinking before we get into the review.  I’m not really into the HGUC line like other UC Fanboys and Fangirls. In fact, I probably wouldn’t have bought this kit had it not been giving to me as a gift. However, since I’ve built the kit I figure I might as well write a quick review for it. While we’re at I might as well be up front and say that I’m not one of those modellers that use 4 different grades of sandpaper on their kits or panics if the seam lines look to show after the kit is put together. I also don’t get worked over the percentages of paint colour mixes with regards to the painting or if someone uses a $300 airbrush or does the job by hand. This is a hobby to me and not a way of life. You’ll never see me ranting and raving about how people should and shouldn’t be building and painting their models. I believe that everyone can do things in their own way and that there’s isn’t a one and only way that some other model builders subscribe and force upon people.

Now that you got a better idea of how I look at things onto the review.

The Assembly

Being that this kit is a 1/144 it’s not really that difficult to put together. The only part I had some issues with was the head of the MS as there was a little tricky part of getting the cockpit opening part of fit in its grooves. The hands were also tricky and I found the instructions to be a little on the vague side in showing how to put them together. I was somewhat surprised as I was expecting maybe something a tad more on the complicated sides of things with regards of the HGUC.

Total Assembly time – 45mins to 1hr

Posing

Maybe I’ve been spoiled by other HG’s and Master Grade kits or I was expecting more from a HGUC kit but I was quite let down it. In my case I found that the legs were very limited in posing and in fact I have to keep it a certain way to keep it form falling over. The arms are not much different and can barely hold the guns.

Final Thoughts

This has been my first HGUC kit and I’m still trying to figure out what the big deal about the line is. It is the fact that there are MS units in this line that other lines don’t have? Is it because that it’s “higher quality” for a 1/144 kit? Maybe it’s because I am not a UC fanboy but I wasn’t pumped up or overly excited over this one. Outside of the posing issue, which is normal for 1/144 scale kits, there really isn’t anything special about this one other than it being a HGUC Rick Dias.

Recommended for fans of the UC timeline and HGUC line fans. If you’re not in that group then you might want to save the cash for another kit.
