Episode 8 - Loran's Cow
A zeppelin stops over a large building, and Kihel watches from the ground as Soshie climbs down from it into the building. Soshie and Kihel immediately start fighting - Soshie asks if Mom's okay, and says that it's probably best for her if she doesn't know that Kihel is helping the killer of their father to negotiate.
Loran enters into Grey's room as Soshie is ending her briefing on whom and what is where. Grey reveals that they will be fine, so long as they have to machines of the Dark History. He says that they will be going to the Moon Race's base, in order to defend, so they may prevent activists from doing anything. As Loran and Soshie ride their bikes away, Grey and Kihel talk on the balcony. Grey says that some of the Militia soldiers believe that so long as they win the war, the problem will be solved. He then asks Kihel what she thinks of Loran. Kihel says that she believes he is an honest kid. Grey laughs, saying that to hide a secret, he is a very honest kid.
Walking along, Loran is carrying Soshie in WhiteDoll's hand. They spot a 'rib' mobile suit, which is meant for construction, and is putting up a fence. In front of it, the People of Earth are standing with shovels and rakes, hoping to stop them. As the argument between the two becomes nearly violent, Loran approaches, picking up the Rib and telling them to stop, because weapons will only cause a battle. From a distance, Fran sees this, saying that they may have a fight, and rides closer.
Keith approaches the MoonRace's base with a couple of baskets full of bread. Two MoonRace men stop him, saying that since the bread is being sent to them, they want to send him something as well. He says that he's sorry, but it's only him. One of the men says that it is possible that they can send men and equipment. Nearby, the Moonrace Army kicks out a man who was attempting to defend the Earth People earlier when the Rib incident occurred. The Army Man says that Citizens must follow army instructions. The Man looks terribly distraught, saying that they have almost completely run out of food, and that the Army wants them to steal it from the earth People.
Keith and Fran walk their bikes back away from the MoonRace base. Keith says that he doesn't want to return to being a person of the Moonrace. Fran says that he used to talk about going back and being a Dianna Counter soldier, and living in the Sunbelt zone. Keith says that he does not want to go south, and then abruptly asks her if there are pigs or Cows around here. Keith reveals that selling break can't supply milk to people, and that people want milk and Meat.
Keith, Fran, Loran, and Soshie sit in a circle in the woods, eating. Fran whispers over to Loran, asking him if that is Miss. Heim, and why she is here. Loran confirms that it is Miss. heim, saying that she is there to learn how to control the WhiteDoll. Fran whispers that even if she is screwed up, she doesn't really care. Soshie seems to hear this, and intrudes, asking what is screwed up. Keith quickly rests his hand on her shoulder saying that they are worried there might be arguments if militia soldiers know. Soshie says that it's fishy, and comes to the conclusion that they are all spies of the MoonRace, and report to them things that are happening on Earth. Even after they all say that they are not, claiming that Loran would not fight for the earth race, and how Keith is just a simple kid, Soshie is not convinced, asking when they all first met. They looked stunned, looking at each other with shocked faces. They say in unison that they all came from the same place, and that they have known each other since they were little. Soshie still seems doubtful, but doesn't ask more.
At a nearby MoonRace base, Puo and her superior discuss the nearby whitedoll - they say that the close by militia may also attack the citizens, and that that would be a problem. Puo asks permission to send out a Cute team to ensure their safety. her superior agrees, saying that she can, so long as a WalDom isn't sent, because that will rouse them. Inside a Monnrace home, Keith and Fran take care of a sickly mother, as Soshie looks after a baby. She says that she hates the MoonRace, which she couldn't care if she died in her sleep, and that she's only doing it because Loran asked her to.
Driving a truck, Soshie, Keith, and Fran all sit in the front, heading to a nearby town. When they stop, Loran emerges from the back, helping out the Moonrace man from before who was kicked out. Loran rides a bike to a nearby location and the Moonrace man jumps on the back, hanging on tightly. Loran tells the man that he was brave to leave from where he lived. the man says that he is not, but that they are (presumably the militia men). Then he says that he wishes he could find some milk.
At an abandoned farm, Soshie struggles to catch chickens. Inside, Keith curiously opens a bin, but promptly runs away as bees swarm out at him. They begin to load the truck with the abandoned farm animals. The Man from earlier says that before, he was ecstatic about returning to earth, but with the state of things, he cannot just follow the army's orders blindly: Winter will come, and they will all surely die without crops. They then spot a cow as they begin to load up bags of grain. Loran runs off to get WhiteDoll to move her, realizing the cow is too large to move by hand. Nearby, Fran and Soshie are in the truck as a large pig rams his head into the side of it, causing it to shake violently, scaring them both.
Puo moves her team of Cute's closer, hoping to find out what WhiteDoll is up to.
In the truck and Loran following close behind in WhiteDoll, they head towards where they found the cow, but Puo storms in with the Cute's. speeding up, the truck gets away, and Loran fends off the Cute's. Loran is unable to stop Puo's unit, and she grabs the truck, swinging it around and putting it between herself and Loran, saying that they are very mysterious. Just as Loran realizes that he must fight, because WhiteDoll will be lost and Soshie, who is dressed in her Militia uniform, will be taken away, Harry arrives on the scene in a car that looks like it belongs to the Earth People (in other words, very 1920's). He yells at her to stop - there is to be no battles right now. He says that before they find the assassins, Dianna has ordered there will be no fights. Harry spots the Moonrace man in the back, and asks him if he is with them. The man jumps out, saying that he only wants to raise some animals in the woods so he may support his family (as he does so, animals rush out of the truck). Harry seems to understand, saying that he will ask the returning policy department, and that he will report it to Queen Dianna. The man falls to his knees in thanks, nearly crying. Harry Looks up and recognizes Loran as Loran (not Lora), smiling, saying that He really is helping out the Moonrace people. Loran carries huge things of grain, and in what looks like a large missile launcher on his chest, the Cow sits inside of it.
Loran lowers the cow and the Grain, and there is a very sentimental moment between the man and his wife. Even Soshie, who says she hates the Moonrace, seems to be effected. But it is interrupted as Earth people, on the other side of the fence, yell at them, telling them they are thieves, they should go to hell, and starve. Loran loves forward, saying that they are all human, and that they all have kids, and for the sake of those kids, it's unbelievable that they would say such things. A woman with a kid then yells at him, telling him he shouldn't help the enemy. Loran begins to cry, and even though Keith tells him not to, he admits to them all that he is, in fact, a person of the Moonrace. He tells them that while he fights on the side of the Moonrace, he also fights on the side of the Earth, and that he only fights those who do not cherish their lives.
In the ending scene, Soshie yells at Loran, saying he is too cocky, and slaps him very hard.
Final thoughts: This is a very interesting episode - I have seen, in other series, Mobile suits used for purposes other than fighting, but I've never seen it used to carry a cow and farm supplies. Grey also seems to know from the beginning that Loran is hiding a secret - perhaps he knew that Loran was from the moon all along? And then For Loran to admit that he is of the MoonRace may cause problems - it's obvious from her reaction that Soshie isn't too happy with him.
