Episode 29 - look at me
Tifa has a dream where she runs across a field and hugs Garrod from behind. As she blushes, she tells Garrod to look at her. She wakes up, still blushing and realizes she was dreaming. Jamil knocks on her door and asks if she is in. He asks a favor of her and the bridge members tell us that he wants to find the Newtype research facility that he and Tifa were supposed to be sent to from Zonda Epta. In the hangar, Sam asks how the Leopard is doing and is told that the frame is bent and it will take some time to repair. He wonders if it would be quicker to just upgrade the Leopard instead. Roybea yells to Sam and asks him to hurry up. Wits points out that Roybea is more spirited now and asks if something happened in Estard. Roybea says no but looks away with a guilty face. Sam says that Wits and Roybea really changed. Then he turns and looks at Garrod, who is busy working on the Double X. He says Garrod is now much more responsible than the old Garrod who only wanted to spend time with Tifa. Jamil goes into Tifa’s room but she isn’t there. She is in the hangar, watching Garrod from a distance.
On their aircraft carrier, the Frosts welcome their new potential newtype, Able Bauer. They believe he can sync the flash system with his mobile suit, Rassvet. They ask which campaign he was on and he tells them the Saints Island campaign. Speak of the devil, at Saints Island; the New Federation is under attack by a decked out Jenice. Ennil is now taking revenge for Miles as she goes Rambo on the New Federation mobile suits. While Tifa stares at her canvas, Doctor Techs tells Jamil he thinks the reason for Tifa’s abilities weakening is her separation from Garrod. We get a few shots of the lonely Tifa before an alarm goes off.
The Frosts launch in their Gundams along with Abel in his Rassvet. They wish him luck with his newtype awakening as the Freeden’s Gundams move to engage. Garrod fires a few shots that are easily evaded by Abel. The Frosts fire on Garrod, giving Abel an opening to punch the Double X. In the Freeden’s hangar, Roybea yells at Sam to repair the Leopard and Sam says he is doing his best. Roybea yells ‘Shit!’ and kicks a pile of boxes. Shagia and Olba know that to awaken Abel, he’ll have to feel threatened. They claim to have a malfunctioning electrical system and temporarily retreat. Wits and Abel begin dogfighting and Wits is clearly superior.
Abel begins getting frustrated while evading the beams of the Double X and Airmaster. His outburst is enough to alarm Tifa. Garrod wonders why Abel won’t retreat. Abel says he won’t lose and has a newtype click just like Amuro and Char would. Tifa senses this as well and covers her ears. On the New Federation carrier, the bit companions for the Rassvet awaken and launch. The Frosts respond with a little shock and Sarah tells Jamil that more enemies have launched. Wits takes a barrage from a few bits while the others swarm around Abel. The bits surround Garrod and Wits as Olba and Shagia congratulate Abel on his awakening. They tell him to show his power when Jamil realizes that they’re facing bit mobile suits.
Abel sweats in his cockpit as he comes to realize he is a newtype. The bits break off and begin to slap Garrod and Wits around. Abel sits back and says he feels like he is piloting each of the mobile suits. Tifa grapples with Abel’s power being the same or different from hers. In the hangar, Roybea has had enough and is trying to get into the GX with Sam trying to restrain him. Jamil tells them both to wait and then offers to go. Three bits physically smack Garrod off balance and Abel moves in to kill him. A shot at Garrod is stopped by another beam. Jamil moves in his GX and warns Garrod about the Flash system. Jamil tells Garrod and Wits to spread out and fires the harmonica cannon. Abel sees through the tactic and begins firing on the Freeden.
Tifa exits her room and begins running down a hall when the concussion from a blast knocks her against the wall. Doctor Techs exits the infirmary and sees her clutching her arm. He offers to help but she says she is fine and continues on her way to help Garrod. As the mobile suit fight continues, Jamil wishes he could sense the bits. A shot starts a fire in the Freeden’s engine room and Sarah wants everyone ready to evacuate. Garrod tells Wits and Jamil that he will draw Abel out. Wits calls him an idiot but Garrod’s mind is set. He draws the bits to him as Tifa makes it out to the Freeden’s deck. Jamil says he can’t tell which one is the pilot and calls Garrod back. Garrod takes several hits and begins falling. Abel gets draws his beam saber and his bits follow suit.
The bits begin to hack away at Garrod. Jamil tries to help but is stopped by another bit. As Garrod is plummeting with the Rassvets in pursuit, Tifa pleads with Garrod to look at her. He looks and sees her point to which Rassvet is the real one. Garrod says he sees it, draws his beam saber and hurls it like a spear at Abel. After he is hit, the Rassvet bits deactivate and fall to the ground. Garrod is still falling in Tifa’s direction so Jamil throws the divider shield to him. Garrod flies past Tifa as he is stabilizing but a headless Rassvet with one pissed off Abel Bauer flies toward Tifa. As he winds up punching Tifa, Garrod cuts that arm off. He tells Abel not to touch Tifa and severs the other shoulder.
Shagia and Olba call Abel back to base and he does after little debate. The Double X goes to Tifa but she faints and is caught by Doctor Techs (who has the world’s greatest timing). After the Rassvet parks, Abel says to himself that the flash system operated and that he is a newtype. The Frosts open his cockpit and Shagia tells him that though the flash system did operate, but he isn’t a newtype or he’d see it coming when Shagia pulls out a gun. Abel asks why and Shagia says he’d know if he was a newtype. Abel is killed execution style and the Frosts launch in their Gundams again, this time to attack the Newtype Research Facility.
Doctor Techs leaves the infirmary to find Jamil. He says Tifa is fine but won’t let Jamil in. Jamil asks if he told Garrod about Tifa’s dream. Doctor says there was no need as Garrod realized it on his own. As the camera zooms away from Tifa, we see that Garrod is by her bedside, holding her hand. She tightens her grip and Garrod looks shocked for a moment but then smiles.
Paul Jr’s Thoughts:
This was a nice episode although the Frosts bringing people to attack the Double X is getting a bit old. The Frosts also said clearly that their goal was to kill the Newtypes in the New Federation which answers my speculation about their plans being higher than the New Federation. What are they going to do with the research facility? And can the Freeden possibly beat them there?
